It was with great pleasure that I happened to stumble upon Jupiter Artland recently, a contemporary sculpture park near Edinburgh that gave me one of the biggest surprises I’ve had in a long time.
While the Scottish National Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery are easily accessible from the city centre, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is located slightly further afield to the west of Dean Village, so it’s a little bit inaccessible to unfamiliar visitors.
Think of Dundee and what springs to mind? Images of Desperate Dan scoffing down a cow pie perhaps (Dundee is home to Scottish publisher DC Thomson), or maybe a big fat dollop of marmalade on your morning toast (Dundee is also the birthplace of the first commercially-made marmalade in Britain).
If you ever visit Glasgow by train the end of your line will more than likely be Queen Street station in the centre of the city. From there most people will either catch a bus to one of Glasgow’s many tourist attractions or walk around the city square on their way to the shops, totally bypassing one of the most important historic sites in the city.
Situated in the centre of Glasgow, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is the focal point of the beautiful Kelvingrove Park, the 84-acre green area that was created in 1852 as a place of recreation for the city’s residents.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland both in size and population, with around 600,000 people living in this cosmopolitan city situated on the banks of the River Clyde.
Following on from the incredibly popular but now-defunct T in The Park, the TRNSMT music festival is fast becoming the biggest music event in the Scottish calendar.
Edinburgh is home to the world’s biggest annual multi-arts event which has been running consecutively since its inception in 1947.
These often thought-provoking pieces of public street art have been designed to transform the hidden corners of Glasgow into striking artworks, and a walk between each one allows visitors to see parts of the city that they probably wouldn’t otherwise find.
